A Luis Castillo trade could be on the horizon as the Mariners aim to bolster their roster this offseason.

The Seattle Mariners have become a focal point of offseason trade discussions as interest builds around their ace, Luis Castillo. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, and Orioles have reached out to explore the availability of the 32-year-old right-hander. Castillo’s value has surged following Max Fried’s $218 million deal with the Yankees.

Although the Mariners have listened to offers, their position on Castillo is clear. “We’ll do it, but only if the return improves the team,” a source told Rosenthal. This high asking price reflects Castillo’s impressive track record. Since his 2017 debut, he has posted a 3.56 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and averaged nearly 10 strikeouts per nine innings. His durability has also been noteworthy, ranking among the top 15 in starts over the past four years.

If Castillo is traded, the Mariners are reportedly targeting free-agent first baseman to strengthen their lineup. “Some reports suggest that if the Mariners move Castillo, they’ll pursue Christian Walker aggressively,” Rosenthal wrote. Known for his power and reliable defense, Walker could address a key offensive need for Seattle. However, with Walker turning 34 next season, the Mariners might be cautious about committing to a long-term deal with an aging player.

The Mariners are looking to move Luis Castillo this offseason

Castillo’s contract, valued at $68.25 million over the next three years, is considered relatively affordable, making him an attractive option in a pitching market where prices are soaring. However, his full no-trade clause adds complexity, giving him control over his next destination.

The Mariners’ reluctance to trade Castillo is tied to their rotation depth. Beyond top starters like Logan Gilbert and George Kirby, the team lacks MLB-ready talent. Prospects such as Emerson Hancock and Logan Evans are still developing, making the potential departure of Castillo a risky move.

Earlier in the offseason, the Cubs were floated as a potential trade partner, with second baseman Nico Hoerner mentioned in rumors. However, with Chicago now paving the way for top prospect Matt Shaw, it seems less likely that Hoerner would be included in any trade package.

Seattle’s situation reflects a delicate balancing act—bolstering their offense while preserving a strong rotation. Trading Castillo could bring a significant return, but it would also expose the Mariners to potential pitching vulnerabilities, especially with no certainty of acquiring a comparable bat like Walker.

As the market shifts, the Mariners must carefully evaluate their strategy. Castillo’s value is clear, but any trade must align with their long-term vision for success in a competitive AL West. For now, all eyes are on Seattle to see if they’ll make the bold decision to move their ace.
