Two recent reports have connected the Seattle Mariners to a couple of high-profile players as potential upgrades at second base for 2025.
Reflecting on their 2024 season, the Mariners will likely feel significant frustration. Despite being one of MLB’s top teams in the first half and holding the lead in the American League West for much of the early season, a key weakness ultimately derailed their playoff aspirations.
While Seattle boasted one of the league’s stronger starting rotations, the pitching staff couldn’t compensate for the lineup’s struggle to generate runs. The Mariners ranked in the league’s bottom ten in RBIs, bottom five in total bases, and had the second-lowest team batting average last season. Although they aimed to bolster their lineup before the trade deadline, the Mariners’ front office fell short in making meaningful enhancements.

This offseason, adding impact hitters is a priority. Numerous rumors point to second base as a key position for improvement, especially after Jorge Polanco’s disappointing performance in 2024. New reports now suggest the Mariners are eyeing two of the best free agents available to address this need.
Seattle Mariners linked to Gleyber Torres and Hye-Seong Kim in free agency
On Tuesday, ESPN MLB analyst Kiley McDaniel released his rankings of the top 50 free agents in this year’s market, placing New York Yankees veteran Gleyber Torres at No. 20.

McDaniel suggested that the Seattle Mariners should be strong contenders for the second baseman, as he would fit their need for quality hitters on reasonable contracts and align with their focus on hitting skills over sheer power. McDaniel estimated Torres, a two-time All-Star, could secure a three-year, $52.5 million contract this offseason.
In addition to Torres, MLB Network insider Jon Morosi reported on Wednesday that the Mariners are among the teams closely evaluating infielder Hye-Seong Kim, whom the Kiwoom Heroes will post this offseason. The 28-year-old South Korean star had an impressive season, hitting .326 with an .841 OPS, 30 stolen bases, and 90 runs scored, showcasing strong defense in the middle infield. Kim could provide the Mariners with another appealing, affordable option for next season.
