Trade rumors involving the Seattle Mariners’ starting pitchers have been a major talking point this month. Luis Castillo has been mentioned in speculation linking him to Boston in exchange for first baseman Triston Casas, though Justin Hollander has dismissed that possibility.
While Hollander seems reluctant to trade Castillo or any other Mariners starter, the Chicago Cubs could still be a potential suitor. Earlier, there were discussions about a possible trade between the two teams, but no progress was made despite talks about Cody Bellinger and Nico Hoerner.
However, with the Cubs’ trade talks for Jesús Luzardo with Miami seemingly falling apart, they might now give the Mariners’ pitchers a closer look.

Mariners Rumors: Could Cubs emerge as trade partner for starting pitching?
Aside from their major trade for Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker, the Cubs have focused on improving their starting pitching this offseason, bringing in left-handed starter Matthew Boyd on a two-year, $29 million contract. Even though their rotation already includes lefties Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele, the Cubs showed interest in adding another lefty in Jesús Luzardo.
The exact reason the talks for Luzardo fell apart is unclear, but it’s believed his physicals were the issue. Luzardo dealt with elbow tightness last season and was later sidelined with a lumbar stress reaction, ending his year early.
This is where the Mariners come into play. With right-hander Jameson Taillon secured in their rotation, the Cubs may look to add another right-handed starter if they have doubts about Javier Assad. Luis Castillo is a logical target for the Cubs due to his durability, team control, and better strikeout numbers compared to Assad.
The key question is what the Mariners would want in return for Castillo. Hoerner would likely be a must in any trade, as Seattle needs a middle infielder, and Hoerner is an ideal fit. Additionally, the Cubs boast a top-10 farm system that the Mariners could tap into if a straight Castillo-for-Hoerner deal isn’t enough for Hollander.
The failed Luzardo talks open a door for the Mariners to secure the middle infielder they need for next season. Castillo, being healthier than Luzardo, provides the Cubs with a reliable right-handed starter, helping balance their rotation.
