The Seattle Seahawks required more defensive support than they received in Week 4. With numerous injured starters, they relied on several backups who struggled against the Detroit Lions. Among them was Tyus Bowser, a recent addition to Seattle’s practice squad who had previously played under Mike Macdonald with the Baltimore Ravens.
Bowser’s career has been somewhat unconventional. He recorded 40 quarterback pressures in 2021 but dealt with significant injuries in 2022 and missed the entirety of 2023 due to a knee injury. Despite any potential he may have shown teams this year, it wasn’t until Seattle took a gamble on him that he got another opportunity.
In the game against the Lions, Bowser participated in 25 snaps, primarily focused on run defense, but his impact was minimal. He recorded just one quarterback pressure and one tackle, which clearly wasn’t enough to contribute significantly to the team’s performance. Consequently, the Seahawks released Bowser from their practice squad on Thursday, indicating their lack of confidence in his future contributions.
Seahawks waive Tyus Bowser and the Miami Dolphins scoop him up
The Miami Dolphins were clearly anticipating Bowser’s release, as they quickly claimed him off waivers—so quickly that it felt unusual. Miami certainly needs assistance with their pass rush, especially after finding out that Jaelan Phillips will be sidelined again due to injury.

However, Bowser seems to have declined significantly from his 2021 performance due to Achilles and knee injuries. He has also struggled with tackling, missing over 21 percent of his attempts in both 2021 and 2022. Given that tackling has been a problem for the Seahawks this season, they likely decided to part ways with Bowser, believing he wouldn’t address that issue.
On the bright side, Seattle’s decision to release the veteran could indicate that Uchenna Nwosu or Boye Mafe—possibly both—might be ready to return in Week 5, and Bowser was simply an additional player for depth.
