The San Francisco Giants were reportedly interested in signing free-agent pitcher Corbin Burnes, but he ultimately chose the Arizona Diamondbacks, leaving the Giants searching for alternatives.

With a focus on contending in 2025, the Giants still need to bolster their rotation this offseason. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently suggested that the Giants would be an ideal trade partner for the Miami Marlins to acquire ace Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara, who missed the 2024 season due to injury, won the Cy Young Award in 2022 and remains a highly regarded pitcher.

Rymer proposed the following trade scenario:

San Francisco Giants receive: RHP Sandy Alcantara
Miami Marlins receive: LHP Kyle Harrison, OF Luis Matos

“Though there were reports claiming the Giants offered Corbin Burnes more than the $210 million he signed for with Arizona, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has refuted this,” Rymer wrote. “Regardless, the Giants still need to fill the rotation spot left by Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner. While San Francisco would likely protect its lone top-100 prospect, the team must be prepared to offer significant value in pursuing Alcantara.”

Alcantara would be a game-changing addition for the Giants, as he’s one of baseball’s premier pitchers when healthy and is under team control through 2027 at a team-friendly rate. However, acquiring him would come at a steep cost, potentially including two promising young players.

Kyle Harrison, 23, showed potential in 2024, making 24 starts with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Luis Matos, 22, has struggled in his first two MLB seasons, posting a 78 OPS+ over 378 career at-bats. Both players represent raw talent with significant upside, making them attractive assets for Miami.
