The San Francisco Giants are not actively seeking a new high-leverage reliever, despite closer His struggles last season, where he posted a 4.88 ERA. Team president Buster Posey remains confident in His abilities.

Speaking with local media, Posey brought up Him without being prompted, as reported by Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle.

“Buster Posey, unprompted, told the local media that he’s not looking to move Camilo Doval,” Slusser said. “He still views Doval as a shutdown-type reliever and a valuable piece. (This is why so many teams are interested in him, though it seems unlikely the Giants will let him go.)”

Doval’s challenging 2024 season followed an impressive 2023 campaign, where he led the NL with 39 saves, earned an All-Star nod, and posted a strong 2.93 ERA. However, the 27-year-old has had issues with blown saves throughout his career, converting 92 of 111 opportunities (83%). In 2024, he converted 23 of 28 chances (82.1%), lagging behind top closers like Mason Miller (90.3%) and Emmanuel Clase (94%).

San Francisco temporarily sent Doval to Triple-A in August to help him reset mentally, but he returned with a 5.40 ERA over his final 16 appearances. Despite these struggles, the Dominican pitcher has drawn significant interest on the trade market, prompting Posey’s remarks.

Buster Posey is ‘bullish’ on Camilo Doval returning to Giants

Doval may not reclaim the closer role if he returns to San Francisco in 2025, as right-hander Ryan Walker outperformed him this past season. The 29-year-old Walker recorded a 10-4 record over 76 appearances, posting a stellar 1.91 ERA, 21 holds, and 10 saves in 14 opportunities. Nevertheless, Doval could still serve as a reliable setup man for the Giants.

Giants legend Buster Posey, now team president, expressed optimism about Doval’s potential during an offseason conversation with NBC Sports’ Alex Pavlovic.

“I’m pretty bullish on Doval coming back,” Posey said. “This guy has the potential to be a dominant piece. We’ve seen it—he’s got nearly 100 career saves, and that’s not by chance. I’m excited to talk with him this offseason. Having caught him before, I know his personality, and I have confidence in him being a key contributor for us.”

After signing shortstop Willy Adames to a record-breaking seven-year, $182 million deal—the largest guaranteed contract in Giants history—Posey appears committed to building the roster rather than selling assets in his first year as team president.
