The San Francisco 49ers have grappled with multiple injuries in the first half of the 2024 NFL season, with standout running back Christian McCaffrey being the most prominent name on the list. McCaffrey missed the start of the season while recovering from an Achilles injury. Fortunately, head coach Kyle Shanahan shared an optimistic update on McCaffrey’s condition as Week 10 approaches.
McCaffrey was limited in Wednesday’s practice, but Shanahan confirmed he’s experiencing “no pain,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This is promising news for the 49ers as they prepare to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with hopes that McCaffrey’s recovery will continue smoothly.

In 2023, McCaffrey was widely considered the top running back in the league, rushing for a career-best and NFL-leading 1,459 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns on 272 carries. His impressive season helped propel the 49ers through a challenging regular season and into the playoffs, ultimately reaching Super Bowl 58. His efforts earned him the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award.
Following their Week 9 game, reports confirmed McCaffrey’s return to practice, bringing excitement to his teammates. Offensive tackle Trent Williams expressed his delight, saying, “It’s incredible to see that ‘2-3’ out there doing his extensive warmup. A million high knees before practice—it’s awesome to watch… Honestly, he could enhance any offense, but ours is especially suited to his strengths, so it’s going to be a huge boost for us.”
With McCaffrey back, the 49ers hope he’ll provide the spark they need to shift momentum in their season. They’ll enter the Week 10 game against the Buccaneers with a 4-4 record, aiming to turn things around.
