The San Francisco 49ers secured an important divisional win against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night but faced some challenges along the way. Running back Jordan Mason injured his left shoulder during the second quarter of the 36-24 victory over their NFC West rivals.

He attempted to return in the second half but was forced to leave again due to discomfort, spending the rest of the game on the sideline.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan explained that Mason initially believed he could continue playing, but the pain became too much. Shanahan mentioned he might have used Mason in an emergency situation but didn’t confirm whether the injury was severe. “You never know,” Shanahan said, noting that adrenaline during games can mask injuries and they would know more after further testing on Friday.

Mason sustained the injury following an impressive 14-yard run, landing awkwardly on his left shoulder. He remained down on the field for several minutes before walking off to the locker room for X-rays.

Before exiting, Mason had rushed eight times for 65 yards. Rookie Isaac Guerendo, a fourth-round pick from Louisville, stepped in to take over at running back.

Mason began the season as the replacement for All-Pro Christian McCaffrey, who is recovering from bilateral Achilles tendinitis. The Georgia Tech product has been a standout in the 2024 season, leading the league with 105 carries for 536 yards and three touchdowns through the first five weeks. His rushing yards rank second in the NFL, just behind Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens.
