A report Wednesday morning indicated that the Red Sox were “engaged in discussions” about acquiring a veteran third baseman. However, later that day, Boston reportedly secured a different star at the hot corner.
After rumored talks with the St. Louis Cardinals regarding Nolan Arenado, Craig Breslow and his staff made another major offseason move by acquiring Alex Bregman. The Red Sox not only landed the right-handed bat they were seeking, but they did so without committing to the long-term contract Bregman had initially desired.
With Bregman now in Boston, Arenado is highly unlikely to join the Red Sox—a potential disappointment for the eight-time All-Star, who was reportedly “highly, highly motivated” to play at Fenway Park. His future remains uncertain, but ESPN’s Buster Olney provided an update after Bregman’s reported signing.

“Nolan Arenado moves to the forefront in the third base market, now that Bregman is off the board,” Olney posted on X Thursday morning. “The Yankees have not been engaged in conversations with the Cardinals about him.”
With Bregman no longer available, teams that missed out on him could shift their focus to Arenado. The Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs were reportedly among those that pursued Bregman but ultimately watched him reunite with Alex Cora.
Meanwhile, St. Louis remains open for business. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak confirmed Wednesday that the team is “still looking” for a trade partner for Arenado.
