After finishing the 2024 season with a 3-14 record, the New York Giants are aiming for a fresh start at quarterback. The team has released Daniel Jones, leaving Drew Lock as the temporary starter. However, according to NFL rumors, the Giants may be exploring a trade for quarterback from the Los Angeles Rams.
Despite reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers might be a better fit, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes Stafford could work well in New York.
“In New York, I think the Los Angeles Rams QB would be joining a team that’s much closer than people think,” Breer wrote. “They have a franchise left tackle in Andrew Thomas, a promising No. 1 receiver in Malik Nabers, and a strong defensive core featuring Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, and Kayvon Thibodeaux.”
Additionally, the Giants have enough financial flexibility to acquire Stafford and use his presence to attract other veteran talent.

Breer also noted that the Giants’ urgency to solidify their quarterback situation could push them to make a bold move.
“With some individuals in the organization fighting to keep their jobs and under pressure to correct the mistake of the Daniel Jones contract, I could see the Giants acting with some urgency,” Breer added.
Stafford is coming off a 2024-25 season where he completed 340 of 517 passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. However, at 37 years old entering the 2025 season, his time in the NFL may be nearing its end.
Jeff Saturday: ‘No chance’ Matthew Stafford ends up a Giant
On Wednesday’s episode of ESPN’s Get Up, Jeff Saturday explained why he believes the New York Giants won’t pursue Matthew Stafford.

“They have the fifth-worst pass protection rate in the league—you’re going to get broken,” Saturday said. “Why would you do that? You’re 37, bro, you’re chilling. You and your wife are doing commercials. You’re in L.A., life is good. And now you’re going to go to New York behind that offensive line? They just got rid of their best player, who won a Super Bowl with a team in your division.
“What about that makes you say, ‘Yeah, let me sign up for New York’? No sir, stay with the Rams.”
While the Giants will have new leadership on offense in 2025, Saturday is certain that Stafford won’t be part of it.
