The Boston Red Sox are reportedly targeting free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to add some much-needed right-handed power to their lineup. However, roster complications may pose challenges to finalizing a deal.
Bregman, known as one of the premier defensive third basemen in the American League, earned his first Gold Glove award in 2024. The Red Sox have struggled defensively at third base since Rafael Devers assumed the position. If Boston were to sign Bregman, he would likely become the top choice for the hot corner. Questions remain, though, about Devers’ willingness to switch positions.
Interestingly, Devers might be more open to a position change than initially expected, as hinted by his social media activity. He recently liked an Instagram reel from the “Section 10” Red Sox podcast, which advocated for signing Bregman and moving Devers to a full-time designated hitter role.

Devers has previously voiced frustration with the team’s lack of spending, expressing during last spring training that the Red Sox need reinforcements from free agency. It seems he still supports that stance, even if it involves changes to his own role.
The Boston Red Sox have had their sights set on free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to bring some right-handed pop to their lineup, but some roster questions stand in the way of a potential contract between the two parties.
Bregman has been one of the best defensive third basemen in the American League for quite some time, and he was rewarded with his first Gold Glove award for his efforts in 2024. Boston’s defense at the hot corner has been lacking since Rafael Devers took over, and if the Sox signed Bregman, he would be the preferable option at third base. Devers’ willingness to switch positions, however, has been debated.
But he appears to be more accepting of a move than fans and reporters initially expected — at least, according to his Instagram activity. Red Sox podcast “Section 10” posted an Instagram reel about their desire to have Bregman join the team as the third baseman, a move that would turn Devers into a permanent designated hitter. Devers liked the post, which could mean a few different things.
The third baseman spoke out against ownership’s recent lack of spending at last winter’s spring training. He said through a translator that it’s clear the Red Sox need help from the free agent market, and he seemingly stands by that statement.
Rafael Devers likes Instagram post that advocates for Red Sox to sign Alex Bregman
The clip Devers liked showcases Bregman’s leadership and defensive abilities—qualities the Red Sox could certainly use after last season’s 81-81 record and 115 errors. It’s likely Devers recognizes that as well.
Alternatively, Devers might have liked the post as a personal motivator. The 28-year-old made significant defensive improvements last season, recording a career-low 12 errors at third base despite dealing with shoulder injuries. While he’s led American League third basemen in errors every year since taking over the position in 2018, his progress in 2024 showed a smoother, more reliable performance. Devers may be determined to build on that momentum and solidify his place at the position.
Many in Red Sox Nation hope Devers’ like signals his interest in bringing Bregman to Boston. The veteran Astro could pair with a healthy Trevor Story to provide leadership, right-handed power, and steady defense on the left side of the infield.
As the highest-paid player in Red Sox history and a key figure in the clubhouse, Devers likely holds some sway with the front office. Let’s hope they’re keeping an eye on his Instagram activity.
