Throughout the 2010s, the Philadelphia Eagles struggled with one of the league’s weakest secondaries. However, the arrival of Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay via trade from the Detroit Lions marked a turning point.
Slay’s immediate impact helped Philadelphia’s pass defense rank in the top 10 in three of the last four seasons, solidifying his reputation as a lockdown cornerback.
As the Eagles prepare to face the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, the 34-year-old Slay acknowledges that Sunday could be his final game in Philadelphia.
According to Ashlyn Sullivan of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Slay is “preparing” for this matchup to be his last home game in an Eagles uniform. While he’s “85 percent” leaning toward playing another season, he admits it likely won’t be with the team.
Philadelphia has younger cornerbacks, such as Kelee Ringo and Isaiah Rodgers, who could step into Slay’s role. Even so, the possibility of moving on from him would be surprising. Cutting or trading Slay before June 1 would result in $22.75 million in dead cap and an $8.97 million cap hit.
However, a post-June 1 designation would yield $4.324 million in cap savings in 2025.
Ultimately, the Eagles are expected to focus on getting younger after this season, which could signal the end of Slay’s time with the team.
