The San Diego Padres are among the top teams in the league, but they still need to make improvements to surpass the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League.

Earlier this week, I suggested a potential trade that would bring Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. to San Diego in a major deal.

Here’s the proposed trade:

Padres receive: OF Luis Robert Jr.
White Sox receive: LHP Kash Mayfield, SS/2B Cobb Hightower, RHP Braden Nett

For the Padres, the key to any trade this season would be acquiring a star who can be controlled long-term. With many players on expiring contracts, adding another one in a trade wouldn’t be practical. That’s why Robert, who is team-controlled, makes sense, especially with the gap in the outfield left by Jurickson Profar’s departure.

The three prospects headed to Chicago should be enough to finalize the deal. Kash Mayfield is a high-potential pitcher with multiple strong offerings and good command. Cobb Hightower, also a 20-year-old, has yet to play professionally but possesses intriguing raw talent. Braden Nett, a right-handed pitcher, has been impressive in the minors with a dominant fastball and solid secondary pitches.

For the Padres, this trade would be the price of bringing in a star. Acquiring Robert would add another standout player to the lineup, joining Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the outfield. Although Robert’s performance this season hasn’t been stellar, a change in environment on a contending team could help him find his form.
