JUST IN: New York Yankees To Land $50 Million New York Mets All-Star Jeff McNeil After Losing Gleyber Torres

This winter, the New York Yankees lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets but made moves to counter the loss by acquiring Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams. There may still be one more trade in the works to strengthen their infield.

FanSided’s Jacob Mountz suggested the Yankees target New York Mets All-Star Jeff McNeil to replace Gleyber Torres, who signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent.

Mountz pointed out that McNeil, a slap hitter who typically pulls the ball, isn’t known for hitting home runs, but playing in Yankee Stadium could change that. Baseball Savant’s projections show McNeil could have hit 19 home runs in Yankee Stadium in 2024, compared to the 12 he hit overall.

McNeil, the 2022 batting champion, had a rough 2024 season with a .238/.308/.384 slash line. A fresh start could be beneficial for him. He signed a four-year, $50 million contract in 2023.

Mountz noted that McNeil, who turns 33 this season, is owed $15.75 million over the next two years, with a club option for 2027 at the same price. Trading McNeil would provide the Mets with a solid return and some financial flexibility, potentially aiding in their efforts to re-sign Pete Alonso.

The Yankees are in need of a second baseman. While DJ LeMahieu could be a candidate for the role, his injury struggles and .232 batting average over the last two seasons raise concerns. Acquiring McNeil would complete their infield with Jazz Chisholm Jr., Anthony Volpe, McNeil, and Paul Goldschmidt.
