The New York Rangers have reported that forward Alexis Lafrenière is considered day-to-day due to an upper-body injury. In five games this season, Lafrenière has recorded three goals and three assists, totaling six points.

The 23-year-old is coming off his best NHL season, where he posted 28 goals and 29 assists, amassing 56 points across 82 games. He also contributed eight goals and 14 points in 16 Stanley Cup playoff appearances.

Lafrenière has steadily improved his point production since his debut in the 2020-21 season, adding 18 points each year. Last week, Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff suggested that Lafrenière might soon sign a long-term extension with the Rangers, potentially for eight years at $8 million per year, though a shorter-term deal could be possible.

Seravalli also mentioned the challenge for the Rangers in managing the first two years of the contract due to salary cap constraints, but expects Lafrenière’s next deal to have an average annual value (AAV) of no less than $7 million.

Lafrenière has played 303 NHL games, recording 78 goals and 76 assists for a total of 154 points, with an additional 23 points in 43 playoff games. Selected first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, it took Lafrenière some time to make a significant impact.

Prior to his NHL career, he spent three years with the Rimouski Oceanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he earned the QMJHL and CHL Rookie of the Year honors in 2017-18 and CHL Player of the Year in 2019-20. In his junior career, the St-Eustache, Quebec native scored 297 points in 173 games.
