The New York Rangers have kicked off the 2024/25 season with an impressive start, and they’ve now placed veteran defenseman on waivers after he appeared in just one game for the team.

The Rangers, one of several teams performing exceptionally well early in the season, have lost only once in overtime across six games. With a deep, star-studded roster, they are poised for a serious run at the Stanley Cup Finals this year.

He, who played just five games for New York last season, is 34 years old and made his NHL debut in 2012 with the Buffalo Sabres. Although he never developed into the top-level player some expected, he was part of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup-winning team in 2016/17, playing 34 games that season.

Over his career, Ruhwedel has appeared in 365 NHL games, recording 13 goals and 49 points, but with only six games played over the past two years, his time as a regular NHL player may be coming to an end.

In related news, Elliotte Friedman reported that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Conor Sheary cleared waivers and will now join the AHL with a $2 million AAV.

The waiver wire has seen little movement lately, as teams are finalizing their rosters. Ruhwedel is also expected to clear waivers and remain a depth option for the Rangers as they pursue their long-awaited Stanley Cup Finals appearance.
