The New York Mets are aiming to accelerate their push for a championship after coming within two wins of the 2024 World Series. While their ideal offseason includes acquiring outfielder Juan Soto to bolster manager Carlos Mendoza’s lineup, competition for Soto’s services is fierce.
If the Mets miss out on Soto—who could command a record-breaking contract—president of baseball operations David Stearns will face crucial decisions in shaping the roster. The team has several needs to address this winter, starting with first base, as slugger Pete Alonso has entered free agency. Additionally, the starting rotation requires reinforcements, with Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and José Quintana also hitting the open market.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller predicts Soto will return to the New York Yankees on a 13-year, $569 million deal. While this would be a setback for the Mets, Miller forecasts significant acquisitions for them as they gear up for another postseason run.
Of the 12 players who declined the $21.05 million qualifying offer, Miller projects the Mets will sign three to multi-year deals. These include re-signing Alonso to an eight-year, $226 million deal and Severino to a three-year, $48 million contract. A new addition, Corbin Burnes, is predicted to join the Mets on a five-year, $170 million deal.
The Severino contract aligns closely with his market value, which Spotrac estimates at four years and $55.9 million. However, the projected deals for Alonso and Burnes appear misaligned. Alonso’s market value is closer to six years and $174 million, while Burnes’ value is estimated at six years and $180 million, with some projections exceeding $200 million.
