The New York Mets recognize that strengthening their bullpen is crucial if they hope to surpass the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs.
Both teams are currently targeting left-handed reliever Tanner Scott, one of the top arms available on the market. However, if the Mets are unable to secure Scott, they might turn their attention to a more familiar option.
Jeff Hoffman, now a free agent, is coming off the best season of his career. In 2024, he appeared in 66 games for the Philadelphia Phillies, recording an impressive 2.17 ERA and earning a spot in the MLB All-Star Game.
According to Baseball Savant, Hoffman was among the league’s elite relievers last season, ranking in the 96th percentile for chase rate, whiff rate, and strikeout percentage, while also ranking in the 81st percentile for limiting walks.
Despite his standout performance, Hoffman is projected to command a manageable contract for the Mets. He’s expected to sign a two-year deal worth $12.4 million—a potential bargain if he can replicate his 2024 success.
Having spent the last two seasons with the Phillies, Hoffman is well-acquainted with pitching in National League East ballparks and facing elite hitters like Ronald Acuña Jr. He also gained valuable experience against Bryce Harper during spring training matchups.
While Scott may be the more sought-after reliever at the moment, Hoffman could prove to be just as impactful if the Mets decide to pivot in his direction.
