The New York Mets have been active this winter, starting the offseason with a major move to acquire outfielder Juan Soto on a nearly $800 million deal. They’ve also added players like Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, and Sean Manaea, but their offseason isn’t over yet.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mets are still focused on strengthening a few key positions, with the bullpen being the most notable area for improvement.

Passan mentioned that the Mets are in discussions to add an outfielder, relievers, and possibly a starter, with the “Winter of Soto” continuing to unfold.

With Mets owner Steve Cohen’s deep pockets, New York could target the top reliever available, and the standout choice is San Diego Padres left-hander Tanner Scott.

While the Mets already have Edwin Diaz as their closer, adding another left-handed pitcher with closer-like capabilities would be valuable, especially for handling hitters like Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani.

The Padres successfully used a duo of Scott and closer Robert Suarez in 2024, and the Mets could consider signing Scott to a three or four-year contract worth around $20 million per year to bolster their bullpen for the coming seasons.
