The New York Mets are reportedly fielding numerous calls about Starling Marte, according to Bleacher Report and Jeff Passan. Marte, 36, is coming off a .269 season and has two Gold Gloves to his name.

If the Mets decide to part ways with him, the Pittsburgh Pirates could be a potential destination to reunite with their former outfielder.

The Pirates, in need of a corner outfielder after parting ways with Bryan De La Cruz, could be interested, but they would likely not take on Marte’s full $20.75 million salary for 2025.

A potential trade could look like this:

Pittsburgh Pirates receive: Starling Marte (Mets retain 50% of his salary)
New York Mets receive: Jack Brannigan (Pirates No. 14 prospect), Billy Cook (Pirates No. 22 prospect), Axiel Plaz (Pirates No. 30 prospect)

Hitting The Road With The New York Mets' Starling Marte

With the Mets covering half of Marte’s salary, the Pirates could add Plaz to the deal. Marte has just one year left on his contract, and while this trade seems to favor the Mets, the Pirates may be willing to part with a couple more prospects to avoid taking on the full salary. Pirates manager Derek Shelton would have to decide between Marte and Bryan Reynolds for left field, shifting the other to right field.

Marte played for Pittsburgh from 2012-2019, earning two Gold Gloves and being part of three playoff teams. His return would bring a familiar face back to the Pirates’ outfield, much to the fans’ delight.
