JUST IN: Los Angeles Rams craving organizational excellence trade scenario land Aaron Rodgers

Colin Cowherd is known for making bold trade proposals, but his latest might be his most outlandish yet.

The Fox Sports host suggested a scenario in which the New York Giants trade the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams for 37-year-old Matthew Stafford. In addition, he proposed that the Rams could then acquire 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers as a short-term replacement.

Cowherd referenced NFL insider Albert Breer, who mentioned the Giants as a potential destination for Stafford. However, Breer never suggested that New York would give up a top-three pick—an idea that originated from Cowherd himself. He claimed a “longtime NFL executive” told him the scenario wasn’t far-fetched.

“So, there is a quote this morning in an Albert Breer story,” Cowherd stated. “The big domino in this year’s quarterback market is Matt Stafford. So, I am going to propose something—I’m just proposing it. I made a couple of calls yesterday and a couple of texts this morning. Yesterday, I was talking to a longtime NFL exec, and he said, ‘This is not crazy.’”

According to Cowherd, the Rams may be growing weary of the constant discussion surrounding Stafford’s future, his wife’s public comments, and Cooper Kupp speaking out on internal matters. While they still like Stafford, they reportedly don’t want to restructure his contract for a long-term commitment.

Meanwhile, Cowherd asserted that the Giants’ leadership—head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen—are under immense pressure to win immediately, making Stafford an attractive option.

“They’ve got to win, or they’ll be fired by Thanksgiving,” Cowherd claimed. “If they don’t have a quarterback, Washington is improving, Philadelphia will steamroll them, and the NFC is getting stronger. The Giants have good players, so they are going to make a move, I believe, on Matt Stafford.”

Aaron Rodgers is looking for a new home in 2025.

Cowherd further stated that the Rams want the Giants’ No. 3 pick, possibly along with a fourth-rounder, so they can trade down and accumulate more draft capital for a future quarterback move.

However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shut down the idea, saying, “There is no way in hell that the Giants are giving up the third overall pick for Matthew Stafford.”

Undeterred, Cowherd then introduced a second part to his proposal: the Rams acquiring Aaron Rodgers as a short-term solution if they part ways with Stafford.

“What the Rams will be in the market for, if Matt Stafford moves, is a one- to two-year rental at quarterback—Aaron Rodgers,” he claimed. “Rodgers needs a career rehab. The Packers improved after he left. His image has taken a hit, big advertisers aren’t interested, and his time with the Jets was a disaster. He needs stability, and the Rams provide that with Sean McVay, a solid offensive line, and a strong young defense. Plus, Matt LaFleur’s brother (Mike) is the OC, and Rodgers already knows that system.”

While Cowherd’s trade proposal is entertaining, it’s deeply flawed. The idea that the Giants would sacrifice a top-three pick for a 37-year-old quarterback seems incredibly unrealistic unless they believe they are immediate Super Bowl contenders.

From the Rams’ perspective, swapping Stafford for Rodgers—who is older and coming off a torn Achilles—hardly qualifies as a fresh start. It’s simply trading one aging quarterback for another with even greater durability concerns.

Even if Stafford is eventually dealt, it’s hard to envision a scenario anywhere close to what Cowherd suggested.
