A few weeks ago, the San Francisco Giants were considered the favorites to land starting pitcher Corbin Burnes. Burnes was seen as the backup option after the Giants lost Blake Snell to their division rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in free agency.
Interestingly, just as the Dodgers snagged Snell, the Giants might turn the tables by signing a starting pitcher from Los Angeles.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently speculated that the Giants could pursue free agent Jack Flaherty, who finished the 2024 season with the Dodgers. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Flaherty is expected to sign a contract worth $80 million this offseason.

“The hard-throwing righty wrapped up last season with a 3.17 ERA over 28 starts, racking up 194 strikeouts in 162 innings,” Kline noted. “He split time between the Detroit Tigers and the Dodgers, ending the year on a high note with his hometown team. This puts the Giants in a strong position to lure away a top postseason pitcher from a division rival.
“Flaherty may not reach the same level of success that Snell achieved during his brief stint with San Francisco, but at 29, he’s a durable starter with some of the best strikeout ability in MLB. Given the remaining options, Flaherty stands out as one of the most appealing choices for the Giants.”
While Flaherty may not match the star power of Snell or Burnes, he would still be a strong consolation prize. He’s a cheaper alternative and arguably the best starter still available. Instead of giving up a wealth of prospects for pitchers like Dylan Cease or Luis Castillo, the Giants could make a statement by poaching Flaherty from the Dodgers in what seems like an obvious move.
