The Chicago Cubs have been active in shaking up their roster during the 2024 MLB offseason. On Wednesday, the team acquired relief pitcher Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians. In addition, another move came to light involving Los Angeles Angels catcher, further bolstering their depth.
The Cubs announced on X (formerly Twitter) that He was acquired from the Angels in exchange for cash considerations. As part of the roster adjustment, right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter was designated for assignment. This transaction keeps Chicago’s 40-man roster at full capacity.
He began his MLB career with the Angels in 2019, showcasing promise with 31 hits and eight home runs in 53 games, posting a .211 batting average and a career-best .711 OPS. Although he saw limited action in the following two seasons, his performance improved in 2023, when he tallied 56 hits and nine home runs in 95 games, hitting .214 with a .659 OPS. In 2024, He contributed 32 hits and two home runs, batting .204 with a .622 OPS. He could provide valuable support for the Cubs.

Chicago finished the 2024 season with an 83-79 record, placing third in the National League Central. Rumors suggest the Cubs are focusing on pitching during free agency, as evidenced by acquiring Eli Morgan. However, the team also bid farewell to longtime pitcher Kyle Hendricks, who signed with the Angels. Hendricks expressed his mixed emotions about leaving:
“Of course, I would have loved to be a Cub my whole life if it could have happened,” Hendricks told Maddie Lee of the *Chicago Sun-Times*. “But you have to produce, and it just didn’t happen for me. They’re in a window right now where they’re really looking to win with what they’ve set up. And I’m happy for that.”
As the Cubs continue to refine their roster, they aim to improve in 2025. Can they build the chemistry and depth needed to achieve greater success?
