Just In: Latest Chargers trade feels like a disaster that absolutely needs to happen

Remember when the Raiders were floating around in those His trade rumors? Yeah, those were the days. Not that I was ever on board with it—I was loudly and proudly against the idea from the jump. No need to dig up receipts; just take my word for it. Always thought it was a terrible move.

Now that He doesn’t really seem to be on Pete Carroll’s radar anymore (which, honestly, is a little weird), we can sit back and chuckle at the teams ready to throw a huge chunk of cash at a guy who, at best, has a couple good seasons left—while being locked into a superstar contract for way longer than that.

A big-name player, maybe just over the hill, angling for a glamorous location with a major brand? Classic LA Chargers move. So, it’s not exactly shocking that our dear (“dear”) Chargers popped up in ESPN’s mock Ramsey trade scenario this week.

Jalen Ramsey to the Chargers feels like a disaster that absolutely needs to happen

“The Chargers don’t necessarily need Jalen Ramsey, but they do have what many teams don’t: the cap flexibility to take on all of his guaranteed money. They’re sitting on just under $32 million in cap space for 2025 and over $118 million for 2026—the most in the NFL, according to Roster Management System.

Adding Ramsey would likely bump free-agent acquisition Donte Jackson to a reserve role, but it would also elevate the ceiling of a defense that’s not far from contending.”

“The moment I hear ‘The Chargers don’t need Ramsey, but—’ I’m convinced they’re doing it. That’s exactly the kind of move they’d make: sign Ramsey, sideline a recent addition, and chase upside. Maybe it works… for 15 games.

But Ramsey’s contract stretches well beyond that, and if they want to burn a chunk of that massive cap space on someone who probably won’t finish his deal in L.A., let them. It’ll be entertaining at the very least.”
