He is entering free agency for the first time in his career this offseason, with the LA Chargers making it clear they want to bring him back. However, Mack, who has never won a playoff game, will take his time considering all of his options.
As one of the top free agents this offseason, He is expected to have plenty of suitors. In addition to the Chargers, the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been mentioned as potential destinations by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The Bears are particularly concerning for the Chargers, as Mack previously played for them, and their new defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, was his first head coach with the Raiders.
There’s mutual interest, as reports from 670 The Score suggest Mack may be open to returning to Chicago. Despite this, the Chargers are likely in a strong position to re-sign him.
The Bears are not a true threat to steal Khalil Mack from Chargers
This doesn’t mean that Mack’s potential interest in returning to Chicago is untrue. He could very well be considering the idea, but it doesn’t mean it’s his only priority this offseason.
What Mack is most focused on is clear: winning. He made it evident in his post-season interviews that his main goal is to compete for a Super Bowl.
Chicago is heading in the right direction with Caleb Williams, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick, and offensive-minded coach Ben Johnson. However, there’s one major issue: the Bears haven’t proven themselves yet.
That’s not to say Chicago won’t make the playoffs in 2025, or even become a Super Bowl contender in a few years. But for Mack, time is of the essence.
Mack is in the later stages of his career, and it’s critical for him to find a team that can compete for a Super Bowl right now. Currently, the Chargers are in a better position to do so.
If a team like the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, or Buffalo Bills were interested in Mack, it would be a real concern for the Chargers. Those teams are on another level and could sell Mack on the prospect of winning a Super Bowl.
The Bears, however, don’t have that same appeal. If winning is truly Mack’s top priority, the Chargers don’t need to worry about him leaving for Chicago.
