St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Willson Contreras will take on a new role with the team this season, transitioning from catcher to first base.
The decision comes after the 32-year-old was limited to just 84 games last season due to multiple injuries. The Cardinals hope that the position change will help Contreras stay healthier and contribute more offensively as they aim to rebound in 2025.
Speaking to MLB.com’s John Denton, Contreras expressed optimism about the switch, saying, “I have plenty of time to do everything now.” He noted that playing first base allows him to focus more on his hitting without the added demands of catching, which could lead to improved offensive production.
Contreras also joked about his expectations for the upcoming season after adding 12 pounds of muscle in preparation for the move. “I was joking with my brother, and I said, ‘I’m going to hit 62 [home runs] this year,'” he told Denton. “It’s just a joke. I don’t have any numbers in mind. Whatever comes to me, I’ll take it.”
While 62 home runs is a lofty goal, the shift to first base could help Contreras surpass his career-high 24 homers from 2019 with the Chicago Cubs. It will be interesting to see how the change impacts his performance at the plate in 2025.
