When the offseason officially starts, teams will no longer be permitted to keep players on the 60-day injured list. For the San Francisco Giants, this means they will need to activate Keaton Winn, Tom Murphy, Wilmer Flores, and Jung Hoo Lee.

After the World Series ends, players will declare for free agency, while option decisions and the deadline to reinstate players from the 60-day injured list will occur in the first week.

The 40-man roster is currently at full capacity. However, with unrestricted free agents Michael Conforto, Mark Canha, and Curt Casali leaving, along with Blake Snell opting out for free agency, there will be four openings. These will likely be filled by Winn, Murphy, Flores, and Lee. Additionally, the Giants might free up more space by moving a player like Donovan Walton off the 40-man roster.

The initial 40-man roster is just a starting point for the offseason, with more changes expected due to free-agent signings, trades, waiver claims, and the need to protect prospects from the Rule 5 draft.

The standout player among these additions is Lee, who signed a six-year, $113 million deal last winter to strengthen the team’s defense in center field and lead off the batting order. Unfortunately, his rookie season was cut short after he dislocated his shoulder crashing into the Oracle Park fence.

Winn had a strong first month but struggled with an elbow injury, ending the season with a 7.16 ERA in 12 games. His durability issues may see him spending more time in the bullpen.

Flores and Murphy had difficult seasons as well. Flores hit a career-low .595 OPS, with four home runs, 26 RBI, and 19 runs in 242 plate appearances before landing on the injured list. Meanwhile, Murphy struggled to get going, recording just four hits in 34 at-bats before a knee sprain sidelined him for the year. He’ll enter the second season of a two-year, $8 million deal.

Since the 60-day injured list isn’t available until spring training, the Giants will likely need to create more roster openings beyond those left by the pending free agents.
