New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso faces a pivotal decision in free agency this winter. While the Mets are reportedly eager to retain their star infielder, the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals are seen as potential contenders for his signature.
However, another intriguing possibility has surfaced: the Houston Astros.
Leo Morgenstern of MLB Trade Rumors recently speculated that the Astros might aggressively pursue Alonso after missing out on St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. Morgenstern identified the Astros as “likely suitors” for Alonso, citing their ongoing need for a first baseman.
“Houston has been searching for a new first baseman since optioning and later releasing José Abreu earlier this year,” Morgenstern wrote. “While the team has shown interest in Christian Walker, Alonso could be an alternative target, especially if Alex Bregman signs elsewhere.”
The Astros reportedly offered Bregman a six-year, $156 million deal earlier this offseason, which the third baseman declined. Morgenstern suggested that a similar offer could be enough to secure Alonso, though it remains unclear if Houston would value him as highly as Bregman. Still, the potential spending power of GM Dana Brown gives the team flexibility to make a competitive bid.
Houston’s need for a corner infielder is clear. Recent trade acquisition Isaac Paredes is versatile enough to handle either first or third base, giving the Astros flexibility in how they address their roster needs.
While re-signing Bregman may be unlikely, the Astros could pivot to Alonso with the same offer and have a strong chance of landing him. Adding the slugging first baseman would be a bold move in what has already been a turbulent offseason for Houston.
