The Boston Red Sox are in need of a right-handed power hitter to complement their talented lineup of left-handed bats this offseason.
Alex Bregman’s name first emerged as a potential target in a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic near the end of the 2024 regular season. Bregman would be a logical fit, offering both a strong right-handed bat and improved defense at third base. However, the main question for Boston is whether they can afford him, given their pressing need to invest in pitching this winter.
Initial reports suggested that Bregman might command a deal in the $250 million range, which seemed unrealistic for the Red Sox. However, a more recent report could work in Boston’s favor.

According to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart, the Astros have offered Bregman a five-year, $156 million contract, though the third baseman may be aiming closer to $200 million. Either figure makes a potential deal for Bregman more plausible for the Red Sox.
Acquiring Bregman would address several key issues for Boston. His defense, paired with Trevor Story, would bolster an infield that has struggled defensively over the past two seasons.
Offensively, he would bring balance to the lineup and add championship pedigree as a two-time World Series winner. With the MLB Winter Meetings scheduled for Dec. 9-12 in Dallas, the Red Sox could re-enter discussions for the 30-year-old star.
