New Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona kicked off spring training with a speech that clearly resonated with his players.
“He got all of us fired up,” Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott said, reflecting on Francona’s address to over 140 people, including the entire spring training roster, per the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Returning to the dugout after a year away from managing, the longtime Cleveland skipper emphasized energy, team success, and personal growth. “It was centered on being good for the team, being good for the organization, but also being the best version of yourself,” Abbott added.
Francona’s hiring signals that the Reds are serious about playoff contention. One of the most successful managers of this century, he led the Red Sox and Guardians to two World Series titles and three pennants. Despite Cleveland’s small payroll, he managed just two losing seasons in 11 years.
Cincinnati has hovered around .500 in recent seasons, except for a 100-loss campaign in 2022, in a wide-open NL Central. The Reds last made the playoffs in 2020 and haven’t won a postseason game since 2012.
Francona, known for maximizing rosters regardless of budget, has already made an impression. “He wants the best for you, but he’s also gonna push you to your max—and then try to get even more out of you,” Abbott said.
Despite Francona’s arrival, FanDuel Sportsbook set the Reds’ over/under at 78.5 wins. Judging by Abbott’s enthusiasm, he might be betting on the over.
