The Detroit Lions are focused on the future of their franchise, prioritizing contract extensions to secure key players before they explore other options. This offseason has already seen significant coaching changes, including the departures of Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets and Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears.

Despite these coaching shifts, the team’s roster has largely remained intact for now. However, last season, star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a broken left tibia and fibula in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery and return in 2025.

The Lions may negotiate an extension with Aidan Hutchinson this offseason, and given his status as one of the team’s top players, many fans would love to see the Michigan alum remain in Detroit for years to come.

During the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, February 25, Lions general manager Brad Holmes provided a key update, stating that the team is in the early stages of planning an extension for Hutchinson. Over his 39-game career, Hutchinson has recorded 82 solo tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 65 quarterback hits, and 28.5 sacks—his signature strength.

When asked whether Detroit has the budget to sign another high-profile pass rusher, Holmes admitted it’s unlikely due to rising costs. As a result, don’t expect the Lions to make any major additions to their pass rush this offseason.

Dan Campbell Shares Coaching Update

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed reporters at the NFL Combine on Tuesday, offering an in-depth look at the significant coaching changes within his staff. Given how rarely Campbell has spoken at length about his coaching team, his comments drew plenty of interest.

“I told Ben (Johnson) and A.G. (Aaron Glenn) the same thing when they were leaving,” Campbell said. “The most important thing you’ll have to do is hire your staff. I had to do that once already, and over the last four years, other coaches have come and gone.”

Campbell described this transition as “phase two” in restructuring his coaching staff, emphasizing that he took his time to ensure the right hires. “A lot of interviews, a lot,” he said. “Really sat them down, got to know them, figured them out. The football knowledge is there, but it’s really about the match and the chemistry. That was a big part of it. I think we got it right.”

When asked how many interviews he conducted, Campbell revealed it was at least 24, though he was told the number might have been 26. Regardless of the exact count, his approach underscores the careful consideration he put into building his new coaching staff.
