The Colts’ defense took a significant hit last weekend when edge rusher Samson Ebukam tore his Achilles during practice. Ebukam, who led the team with 9.5 sacks in the 2023 season, was expected to play a key role this year before his injury. However, the Colts may find some relief in the fact that they had already strengthened the position in the offseason.

The team drafted Laiatu Latu in the first round, and a swift adjustment to the professional level could help mitigate the impact of Ebukam’s absence. On Tuesday, Latu mentioned that Ebukam’s guidance has been invaluable during this transition.
“He’s really been a mentor and a big brother to me,” Latu said, according to James Boyd of TheAthletic.com. “We’ve worked on various moves and watched film together. I’m aiming to build on what he contributed and ensure we don’t feel his absence too acutely.”
In addition to Latu, the Colts have Kwity Paye, Dayo Odeyingbo, and Tyquan Lewis on the roster. While Latu might have the highest potential, an early impact from the rookie would be a significant boost for the Colts’ defense.
