Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer had a 2024 season plagued by injuries, limiting him to just nine starts. Despite this, he performed well in those appearances, demonstrating that he can still be a reliable arm if healthy in 2025, even at age 40.
This offseason, there’s notable interest in the veteran pitcher, with Spotrac projecting a $15 million contract for him.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report speculated that the Cincinnati Reds could emerge as a surprise destination for Scherzer, though he identified the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres as more likely suitors.
Miller noted Scherzer’s exceptional track record at Great American Ball Park, where he has posted a dominant stat line over five starts: 33 innings, 15 hits, 1 earned run, 8 walks, and 53 strikeouts.
While the Reds have bolstered their rotation by re-signing Nick Martinez, trading for Brady Singer, and expecting contributions from rookie Rhett Lowder, Miller questioned if they could pass up an opportunity to add a pitcher of Scherzer’s caliber, even at this stage of his career.
Realistically, though, Cincinnati seems more inclined to address other needs, such as adding a rotational outfielder.
The team has also been linked to Philadelphia Phillies free agent Carlos Estévez. However, if Scherzer’s price drops significantly, taking a chance on him could still be a worthwhile move for the Reds.
