JUST IN: Cincinnati Reds take advantage over Cleveland Guardians’ latest sell-off

You can cross Josh Naylor off the list of potential trade targets for the Cincinnati Reds. The Cleveland Guardians have traded their longtime first baseman and former Terry Francona protégé to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for former first-round pick Slade Cecconi and a Competitive Balance Round B draft selection.

While Naylor was rumored to be on the Reds’ radar this offseason, the fit always seemed questionable. Naylor is locked in as a first baseman, a position where Cincinnati already has plenty of talent. With Spencer Steer, Jeimer Candelario, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand in the mix, one of them is likely to be the Reds’ Opening Day first baseman in 2025.

However, the Reds’ real need lies in the outfield, and Cleveland happens to have a strong option available. Lane Thomas, reportedly on the trade block, could be an ideal fit for Cincinnati as a right-handed bat to bolster their lineup.

Josh Naylor trade opens the door for Reds to take advantage of Guardians’ sell-off

The Guardians acquired Thomas from the Washington Nationals last summer in exchange for three prospects. Over his career, Thomas has posted a .247/.313/.428 slash line with a 107 OPS+. Notably, his splits reveal a significant improvement against left-handed pitching—an area where the Reds are in dire need of help. Against southpaws, Thomas’ career OPS is 200 points higher than it is against right-handers.

As a versatile outfielder, Thomas could play either center or right field depending on the matchup. While his arm strength is impressive, inconsistent reads have resulted in below-average defensive metrics throughout his career. This defensive liability might be a concern, given Cincinnati’s recent emphasis on improving team defense, but his offensive upside could make him a compelling option for the Reds.

The Reds have already been linked to Thomas this offseason, and it’s time for Nick Krall to act. With the Guardians having traded Naylor and second baseman Andrés Giménez, dealing Thomas seems like the next logical move. The Reds can’t afford to hesitate any longer.
