Baseball insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic has suggested a fascinating trade idea that could reshape the MLB landscape. He proposes the Cincinnati Reds trade for the dynamic centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox to strengthen their lineup and outfield. Here’s a closer look at the proposed deal and how it could benefit both teams.
“Robert would be an excellent addition for the Reds, who are in need of another power hitter and an upgrade in their outfield,” Bowden explains.

“While his career has been marked by some inconsistency on both offense and defense, as well as a history of nagging injuries, Robert’s talent is undeniable. He’s won a Gold Glove Award, hit 38 home runs in a season, and stolen 20 or more bases in each of the past two years. Plus, he’s under team control for three more seasons.”
A Trade Proposal to Bring Luis Robert Jr. to the Reds
The White Sox are targeting major-league-ready players or position-player prospects, making the Reds a strong trade partner. Jim Bowden suggests a potential deal could involve the Reds’ top shortstop prospect, Tyson Lewis, along with a third-base prospect like Sal Stewart or Cam Collier. The Reds’ depth at shortstop and third base positions allows them to consider such a move.
With players like Matt McLain, Elly De La Cruz, and Noelvi Marte already in the majors, and top infield prospect Edwin Arroyo developing in the minors, the Reds have the flexibility to trade from their surplus. For the White Sox, this deal would offer a valuable return.
This trade could be a win-win for both sides. The Reds continue to build a talented young core, and adding Robert could be the final piece to elevate them to the next level.
Why the Trade Makes Sense for Both Teams
The Reds boast a burgeoning group of young stars with the potential to thrive under manager Terry Francona. Headlined by De La Cruz, who recently posted a historic 25-home run/67-steal season, and supported by rising talents like Hunter Greene, Spencer Steer, Tyler Stephenson, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand, the team has a promising core. Adding Robert to the mix could significantly boost their chances of making a playoff push.
Cincinnati also has room for improvement in center field, a position where they managed only a .220/.303/.408 slash line in 2024. Robert would not only bring a defensive upgrade but also provide value from a financial standpoint. His contract is team-friendly, featuring a $15 million salary for 2025 and $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, with a $2 million buyout.
