JUST IN: Carolina Panthers Outbid Cincinnati Bengals Land Top Free Agent

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver is set to be one of the top free agents on the market and is expected to land a lucrative contract. The former second-round pick out of Clemson had an impressive season, tallying 73 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 12 games, nearly leading the Bengals to the playoffs despite a struggling defense.

While He has been a key contributor over the past five seasons, Cincinnati may struggle to retain him.

Bengals Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin recently addressed Higgins’ future, expressing uncertainty about securing him on a long-term deal. Though he acknowledged the team’s desire to keep the star receiver, financial constraints could pose a challenge.

“It’s going to be hard,” Tobin said, per Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We feel like we have the resources to do it, but it all depends on how the negotiation goes and whether they’re willing to accept wanting to come back at a number that makes sense for everybody.”

In essence, Tobin suggested Higgins would only stay if he agreed to a more team-friendly contract. However, with Cincinnati already investing heavily in Joe Burrow and preparing for Ja’Marr Chase’s upcoming extension, retaining Higgins may not be feasible.

If he prioritizes maximizing his earnings, teams like the Los Angeles Chargers or Carolina Panthers could be strong landing spots.

Bengals Exec: “It’s Going to Be Hard” to Pay Tee Higgins A Market Contract

The Los Angeles Chargers are in dire need of a reliable wide receiver. While head coach Jim Harbaugh emphasizes a run-heavy approach, even he acknowledges the team’s lack of pass-catching talent.

After their disappointing playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Harbaugh stated that quarterback Justin Herbert was put in a difficult position, suggesting that changes are on the horizon.

Second-round pick Ladd McConkey has significant potential, but Quentin Johnston’s inconsistency makes him an unreliable starter. Although improving the interior offensive line is likely a priority, the Chargers could focus on securing Tee Higgins with a lucrative contract.

With over $63 million in cap space, they have the financial flexibility to sign Higgins while still bringing in additional starting-caliber free agents.

More Help For Bryce Young

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young lived up to his draft status in the latter half of the 2024 season and will aim to build on that success in 2025. With a solid offensive line and a promising group of young playmakers, the team could benefit from adding a proven veteran like Tee Higgins.

While Adam Thielen has been a key contributor, the 34-year-old has openly considered retirement and won’t be around forever.

The Panthers may struggle to fit Higgins’ contract into their cap space, as their primary focus will likely be on improving the defense.

However, if they can make it work, his ability to stretch the field and dominate on the sideline would be a perfect complement to Young’s skill set. Pairing Higgins with emerging talents like Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker could give Carolina enough offensive firepower to contend in a weak NFC South.
