He was a major topic during the offseason as the St. Louis Cardinals reportedly spent much of the winter exploring trade options for him.
Dealing Arenado is complicated due to his massive contract and a no-trade clause, which he’s only waived for six teams: the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies.
So far, none of those teams have made a serious push, but the trade market could still develop as the season progresses.
David Schoenfield of ESPN recently speculated that the Cardinals might still move Arenado in a major deal this season.
“Arenado’s future remains uncertain after trade talks during the offseason,” Schoenfield noted. “He’s earning $32 million this year, $27 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027, which could be a sticking point.
But with his strong start — showing solid contact and drawing more walks than strikeouts — teams in need of a third baseman might show interest.”
The Angels, outperforming expectations, could emerge as a serious suitor. The Padres and Dodgers are also potential candidates due to injuries and underwhelming infield production. Meanwhile, the Phillies have struggled with Alec Bohm’s performance.
There’s also speculation that Arenado might expand his list of approved teams, possibly including contenders like the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, or Houston Astros.
