Expectations were modest when the Canadiens picked Florian Xhekaj with the 101st selection in the fourth round of the 2023 draft.
However, since last summer, the situation has shifted. Why? Because Xhekaj has shown remarkable progress. He performed exceptionally well in the OHL during the 23-24 season, displaying a natural scoring ability that wasn’t anticipated at the time of his draft.

As he approaches fall training camp, Florian has one goal: to impress the Montreal Canadiens’ management. Recently, there has been talk that he might start the season with the Laval Rocket in the AHL.
Florian possesses qualities suited to the professional style of play, making him one of the most intriguing players to watch at camp.

But Florian isn’t just aiming to go pro.
He wants to follow in his brother’s footsteps and play for Montreal next season.
In an interview with Stu Cowan, he expressed his determination:
“I’m confident. I want to be with the Montreal Canadiens this year. That’s why I’m here.” – Stu Cowan
We know Florian as a hockey player and recognize his contributions on the ice, especially after his stellar performance in Brantford last season. However, it’s his self-confidence that truly stands out.
Seeing his brother reach the NHL straight out of junior has inspired Florian. He is determined to follow Arber’s path and is working diligently to achieve that goal.
This determination might enable him to adapt quickly to the NHL, as he is putting in the necessary effort to succeed.
Ultimately, it’s up to Florian to prove himself. It’s not enough to look the part; he has to earn his place.
The good news is that Florian understands what it takes to impress the Canadiens’ management. After all, Arber has already paved the way for him.
