The Boston Red Sox have taken steps to address their disappointing 2024 season, but they’ve yet to make any game-changing moves.
Their offseason could take a dramatic turn if they land a star like Alex Bregman in free agency, but Boston appears to be slipping out of contention for him. Should they miss out on Bregman altogether, the Red Sox will need to make a significant move to salvage their offseason.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently speculated that Boston might pursue a blockbuster trade for rival superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if Bregman is off the table. However, the likelihood of the Toronto Blue Jays actually entertaining offers for Guerrero remains questionable.
“The Red Sox have long felt like the best next landing spot for Guerrero, and it’s hard for me to not think that some of the slow-playing we’ve seen this offseason from (Craig) Breslow is with eyes on Vladdy next winter,” Williams wrote. “But they could also accelerate that timeline by offering someone like Marcelo Mayer and a wealth of other prospects. Even after the (Garrett) Crochet trade, Boston still boasts one of the strongest farm systems in baseball, which could help the Blue Jays begin a new chapter post-Vladdy and Bo Bichette.”
While it’s unlikely Toronto would trade Guerrero, the Red Sox could emerge as a leading candidate if they do.
Of course, trading a superstar to a division rival is a tough pill to swallow, but Boston has the assets to make it happen. A potential package could include players like Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Marcelo Mayer, or other top prospects.
Could a Guerrero trade actually be in the cards? Time will tell.
