The Boston Red Sox have been linked to free agent Alex Bregman, especially after falling short in their pursuit of generational talent Juan Soto.

Adding Bregman would address a key need for the Red Sox, as his ability to hit from the right side of the plate could help balance their left-handed-heavy lineup. According to ESPN’s David Schoenfield, Boston is one of seven teams reportedly interested in Bregman, joining the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros, and Washington Nationals.

While Schoenfield noted that Boston doesn’t necessarily need a third baseman with Rafael Devers entrenched at the position, Bregman offers other advantages.

Astros' “Appetite” for Alex Bregman Comes in Doubt Amid Strong Links With Cardinals' Star : r/Astros

“Among players with at least 95 regular-season plate appearances at Fenway, Bregman has the highest OPS,” Schoenfield explained. “Higher than Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, or David Ortiz. In 21 games at Fenway, he’s hit .375/.490/.750. It’s a small sample size, but Bregman’s dead-pull approach fits Fenway’s Green Monster much better than Yankee Stadium.”

Additionally, Bregman could boost the Red Sox’s infield defense, which would benefit a ground-ball-heavy pitching staff (Boston ranked seventh in ground ball rate in 2024). His right-handed bat would also complement a lineup featuring lefties like Rafael Devers, Triston Casas, Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida.

Another factor worth considering is Bregman’s relationship with Red Sox manager Alex Cora. The two worked together in 2017 when Cora served as the Astros’ bench coach, potentially adding another layer of appeal for Boston.
