David Ortiz, never one to hold back his opinions about the Red Sox, made an impassioned plea to his former team.
The Red Sox legend, along with other former players, attended Saturday’s “Fenway Fest.” While the current team prepares for the 2025 MLB season, Ortiz, now a FOX Sports analyst, believes there’s one key piece missing.
“There’s still a guy out there we can go for, and I think we’ve got a really good front office,” Ortiz told NESN’s Tom Caron during the event. “Building a strong lineup isn’t that hard these days. You just have to spend the money and bring in a few guys.

Now, pitching is the tougher part to assemble, but we’ve got that. Pitching can stop even the best offenses. The playoff-caliber pitching staff is already there. We just need to add a couple of power bats to support (Rafael Devers) and the rest of the lineup — one strong bat would make a big difference.”
Ortiz’s comments seem to hint at a specific player, and it’s not hard to guess who.
Alex Bregman remains linked to the Red Sox, with the Detroit Tigers as the only other known team vying for his services. Manager Alex Cora, speaking on Saturday, praised Bregman and emphasized his potential as a Gold Glove-caliber second baseman.
For now, it appears the decision on where Bregman will sign is still up in the air.
