JUST IN: Blockbuster Yankees-Brewers Trade Leaves Door Open For Cincinnati Reds “Legitimate Threat To The Division”

The New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers have agreed on a trade that will send All-Star closer Devin Williams to New York in exchange for starting pitcher Nestor Cortes, second baseman Caleb Durbin, and cash, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

While the Brewers are adding two players who could make an impact in 2025, the return seems underwhelming, especially when compared to the San Diego Padres’ trade for Tanner Scott, which involved multiple top-100 prospects just six months ago.

Cortes is expected to join the Brewers’ rotation, and Durbin could compete for a spot in the starting lineup. However, after losing star infielder Willy Adames to free agency and now trading Williams, Milwaukee appears to be taking a step back.

This situation might open the door for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, or Pittsburgh Pirates to challenge for the National League Central title in 2025.

The Cubs are in “buy mode,” looking to strengthen their roster with the possibility of acquiring Kyle Tucker. With considerable talent already on hand, they are focused on winning now.

The Reds, with a young and healthy roster, are poised to make a strong push in 2025. Superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz made significant progress between 2023 and 2024, and if he continues to develop, combined with the addition of manager Terry Francona and some free-agent signings, they could become a serious contender.

The Pirates, with the potential to have the top pitcher in the league in 2025 with a full season from Paul Skenes, are just a few lineup additions away from being competitive.

Milwaukee has claimed three of the last four division titles, including two consecutive championships. With the Cardinals likely entering a rebuild, the division remains wide open.

That said, it’s always wise not to underestimate Milwaukee.
