Hugh Freeze acknowledges that he needs to improve his communication with his quarterback.
Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze is urging his team to keep their composure after a narrow loss to Oklahoma on Saturday. Freeze directed a message to his quarterback, Payton Thorne, following a critical mistake that led to an interception. Oklahoma capitalized on the error, winning the game 27-21, with the turnover proving to be the pivotal moment.

“I need to make sure (Thorne) better understands the situation, and we should’ve run the ball in that spot,” Freeze said, according to ESPN. “I have to communicate that more clearly.”
Auburn is struggling in the 2024 season, now holding a 2-3 record after close defeats to both Oklahoma and Arkansas. For Oklahoma, the victory marked their first-ever SEC conference win.
Auburn football looking for some success
Hugh Freeze is in his second season at Auburn, having finished 2023 with a 6-7 record. The team seems to be on track for another disappointing season, and Freeze recently faced criticism after Arkansas mocked him for claiming that Auburn would consistently beat them.

The Tigers are struggling in the highly competitive SEC. In a recent game against Oklahoma, Auburn had an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter but ultimately lost. They led 14-0 at halftime and allowed 17 points in the final quarter, despite outgaining the Sooners by nearly 200 yards.
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables described the comeback as his “first experience with Sooner magic” as head coach, praising his team’s performance during the critical final drives.
Auburn’s quarterback, Thorne, was having a standout game, throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, his efforts were overshadowed by a late interception returned for a touchdown by Oklahoma’s Kip Lewis, sealing the Tigers’ fate and breaking the fans’ spirits.
Now 0-2 in SEC play, Auburn faces a tough road ahead with their next game against Georgia on the road, adding to their already challenging schedule.
