Auburn’s kicking struggles continued in their game against Missouri, with a missed 30-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

Freshman kicker Towns McGough, filling in for sophomore Alex McPherson, is 5-for-10 on field goals this season. McPherson, who was a perfect 13-for-13 last season, has yet to play this year due to recovering from a gastrointestinal illness. However, head coach Hugh Freeze mentioned McPherson is expected to handle shorter field goals soon.

“If we get a chance within the 35-yard range, Alex will take the shot. He feels ready for that,” Freeze stated during Monday’s press conference.

Although McPherson hasn’t been officially listed as unavailable since Week 4 against Arkansas, Freeze cited his lack of strength as the reason he hasn’t played. McGough’s early-season misses were on field goals over 50 yards, but he has now missed two from inside 30 yards, including a 27-yard miss at the end of the first half against Oklahoma.

“We’re excited about Towns and his potential, but those are crucial kicks that maintain our momentum,” Freeze said.

Auburn’s next game is an away contest against Kentucky on Saturday, kicking off at 6:45 p.m. CT.
