There’s a potential nightmare scenario looming for the Atlanta Braves: if New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto lands in the National League East—either with the New York Mets or the Philadelphia Phillies—the Braves might need to respond with a blockbuster move of their own.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently highlighted this scenario, suggesting three moves Atlanta could consider to counter such a signing. At the top of his list, Kline proposed an unexpected solution: acquiring Houston Astros third baseman, projected to command a $119 million deal.
“He is the Braves’ infield solution nobody is talking about,” Kline wrote. He acknowledged the apparent redundancy of adding Bregman to a team that already has All-Star third baseman Austin Riley, but suggested a creative approach.
“The best front offices in MLB are creative,” Kline explained. “On the surface, Alex Bregman isn’t a fit for Atlanta. But what if Bregman plays second base, and Ozzie Albies shifts to shortstop, a position he played before reaching the majors?”

While the idea is intriguing, Kline admitted there are likely better options. Signing Willy Adames would bring a natural fit at shortstop, while Gleyber Torres could be a more cost-effective, if less impactful, alternative. Still, if the Braves managed to sign Bregman, they’d gain flexibility to rotate him and Albies at shortstop, offering an unconventional but potentially effective response to a Soto signing.
It’s an interesting thought to keep in mind as free agency unfolds.
