Just In: Angels Re-Sign Adam Cimber To Minor League Deal

Less than two weeks after being released by the Angels, Adam Cimber has rejoined the team on a minor league contract, according to his MLB.com profile. The Angels had initially signed Cimber to a one-year, $1.65 million deal last winter, but he was designated for assignment and released in July while still on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.

It appears there might have been a mutual understanding during the DFA and release, which freed up a 40-man roster spot for the Angels without financial loss, as the team remained responsible for Cimber’s 2024 salary. Given his MLB service time, Cimber could have opted for free agency over an outright assignment, and after exploring his options, he has now returned to Anaheim. This new minor league contract could see him continue his rehab or immediately return to action at Triple-A Salt Lake in what would be an unofficial minor league rehab assignment.

Cimber’s shoulder issues have limited his participation over the last two MLB seasons and negatively impacted his performance, resulting in a 7.20 ERA over 45 innings in 50 appearances since the start of the 2023 season. The right-hander led all MLB pitchers in appearances over the 2021-22 seasons, so his recent struggles may be linked to the heavy workload. The Blue Jays non-tendered Cimber last offseason, and the Angels signed him to the $1.65 million deal, which has yet to pay off.

Despite these two difficult seasons, Cimber was a reliable reliever from 2018-22, posting a 3.20 ERA over 278 2/3 innings with San Diego, Cleveland, Miami, and Toronto. If he can regain his health and form, he might have a shot at securing another low-cost guaranteed MLB deal this winter.
