Miami Marlins ace is making an impressive return this spring. In two spring training starts, the former Cy Young Award winner has thrown three scoreless innings while consistently hitting 100 MPH with his fastball. Coming off Tommy John surgery, his dominant early performance could make him a prime trade target this season.

FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently speculated that the Boston Red Sox could be among the top contenders for Him if he becomes available.

“As of now, Boston has two presumably reliable starters in Crochet and Tanner Houck in addition to intriguing arms like Walker Buehler, Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and the returning Lucas Giolito,” Mountz wrote. “Adding Alcantara would not only provide the Red Sox with a new ace but give them the rotational depth they sorely lack. Going into the season, it seems like the Red Sox may be the team most motivated to pull off such a trade.”

Boston appears to be an ideal destination for Alcantara. The Red Sox have a deep farm system that could help facilitate a deal for the controllable right-hander. Additionally, since the Marlins play in the National League and the Red Sox in the American League, a trade would keep Alcantara out of Miami’s direct competition.

Pairing Alcantara with Garrett Crochet would give Boston a formidable one-two punch at the top of the rotation, significantly improving their chances of contending for a division title and a potential World Series run.
