The New York Yankees have acquired outfielder Cam Eden from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations, as announced by the team earlier today. Eden, a 26-year-old outfielder known for his exceptional speed but limited hitting ability, is expected to bolster the outfield depth for their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton. While his contact and power are lacking, the Yankees might see untapped potential in the speedy right-handed hitter and thrower. Eden made his Major League debut last season with Toronto, where he recorded his first hit and run.

While Cam Eden recorded just an 81 wRC+ in Triple-A last season, he managed to steal 53 bases in 131 games, getting caught only four times. Eden is a fast outfielder who can be a threat on the basepaths and is versatile enough to play all three outfield positions. However, his hitting is a major concern.

His contact skills are below average, as shown by his over 27% strikeout rate this season, and he lacks power. This year, Eden’s performance at the plate has declined further, with a 62 wRC+ and a .299 OBP in the offensively-inclined International League.

He has also seen a decrease in his stolen base efficiency, with 26 steals in 33 attempts, indicating a step back from last season. This seems more like a move to add depth rather than one that will have a significant impact at the Major League level.

Given that outfielders like Brandon Lockridge were traded at the deadline and Everson Pereira is out for the season with a UCL injury, adding depth for the Triple-A team is understandable. Eden, who has some infield experience, could be used as a utility player by the Yankees, but his lack of offensive success in the higher minors is concerning.

That said, speed is always valuable, especially in an organization like the Yankees, where the Major League roster tends to have slower players.
