The San Francisco Giants have revamped their front office after a lackluster 80-win season. They secured third baseman Matt Chapman with a long-term deal and are now aiming to bolster their infield further. Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, the Brewers captured the NL Central title thanks in large part to an impressive season from shortstop Him. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, He might soon find himself in San Francisco as a free agent.
“He would be a better fit for the San Francisco Giants, who are in dire need of a shortstop. As The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly noted, the Giants are planning for a reduced payroll,” Rosenthal explained.
Rosenthal also mentioned alternative options at shortstop, writing, “Ha-Seong Kim could be a more economical choice as he recovers from shoulder surgery and wouldn’t require forfeiting a draft pick (unlike Adames and Alex Bregman, who received qualifying offers). However, even when healthy, Kim wouldn’t provide the same offensive impact as Adames.”
One bright spot for the Giants this past season was the emergence of infielder Tyler Fitzgerald. In 96 games, Fitzgerald delivered a 134 OPS+ with 15 home runs and 34 RBIs. While primarily a shortstop, he showcased versatility by playing multiple positions, offering flexibility for the team’s future plans.
The Giants are searching for a difference-making shortstop
Despite a disappointing season last year, the Giants are poised for a strong 2025 campaign. While they lost Blake Snell to the Dodgers, they still have Logan Webb anchoring the rotation. Matt Chapman remains with the team, and a healthy Jung-ho Lee will bolster the lineup. Adding a top-tier shortstop like Willy Adames could significantly boost their chances in the NL Wild Card race.

However, the Giants face a tough challenge from their division rival, the Dodgers, who continue to build a World Series-caliber roster and are expected to dominate the NL West again. Adames could be a game-changer defensively, complementing Chapman—one of the league’s best defenders at third base—with his strong performance at shortstop.
The primary concern with Adames is his cost. Buster Posey has indicated the team plans to cut payroll this offseason, and Adames’ price tag may not align with those goals. If that’s the case, Ken Rosenthal suggests Ha-Seong Kim as a more budget-friendly alternative. Regardless, the Giants need to address their infield needs and have options available in free agency.
