Huge Boost: Raiders Big Move Lure Top Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coach

The Las Vegas Raiders initially aimed to hire Ben Johnson as their next head coach but came up short when the Chicago Bears secured him instead. Wasting no time, the Raiders pivoted and appointed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek as their new GM.

Spytek brings over 20 years of NFL front office experience and has been a strong contender for general manager roles in recent hiring cycles. While missing out on Johnson was a setback, the addition of Spytek is a significant win for the organization.

During his tenure with the Buccaneers, Spytek contributed to a franchise that made the playoffs five consecutive seasons and won the Super Bowl in 2020. Notably, he shares a long-standing connection with Raiders minority owner Tom Brady, dating back to their time as teammates at Michigan. Spytek also played a role in bringing Brady to Tampa Bay in 2020, hinting at a close working relationship that could shape future decisions for the Raiders.

Armed with over $100 million in salary cap space and potentially 10 draft picks, Spytek has the tools to engineer a quick turnaround for the team. Success, however, will depend on securing the right head coach, with several strong candidates linked to Spytek already in consideration.

Can Spytek Lure Todd Monken to Raiders?

The Raiders had initially requested an interview with Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, but there haven’t been any updates since. It’s possible Monken declined the opportunity or was waiting to see how the general manager situation unfolded in Las Vegas.

The hiring of John Spytek as general manager could improve the Raiders’ chances if they still want Monken. Spytek and Monken previously worked together with the Buccaneers from 2016 to 2018, where Monken was the offensive coordinator and Spytek served as director of player personnel. Their three years together suggest some level of familiarity.

However, if their working relationship wasn’t positive, it could diminish Monken’s interest in the position. That said, there’s no evidence of any issues between them, and Spytek might even help persuade Monken to consider the Raiders’ offer.

Monken, who called plays for the NFL’s top-ranked offense this season, has yet to become a head coach at the NFL level. Joining the Raiders would also give him a chance to reunite with star tight end Brock Bowers, whom he coached at Georgia before moving to the Ravens.

What About Liam Coen?

Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is considered one of the NFL’s top young offensive minds, but there’s been no indication that the Raiders have even requested an interview with him. Coen previously withdrew from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ coaching search, suggesting he’s selective about his opportunities.

That said, Coen worked with Spytek this season, which could make the Raiders a more attractive option for him. If Las Vegas opts for a younger head coach, the 39-year-old Coen might be a better fit than the 58-year-old Monken. Whether Coen will interview with the Raiders remains uncertain, but Spytek’s hiring puts him on the radar. With many head coaching vacancies already filled, the Raiders appear to have the flexibility to take their time in making a decision.
